any help would be greatly appreciated.Oh by the way i live in manitoba canada.
I am new at gardening so what are the best flowers and veg to grow for next year?
This is what I did over a winter spell:
* mapped out yard on a graph paper. Each square was 1'.
* Bought book on perenials; marked all for my Zone.
* Did notations on 1) colors available, 2) time bloom %26amp; 3) for how long they bloom, 4) height, 5) sun, shade or partial.
In fall can plant bulbs: some are tulips, daffodils, iris, day lily, etc.. (day lilies will spread %26amp; invade the neighboring area throught their roots.
Herbs plant in spring (many return following year). Majority are short %26amp; can be in front.
I added some stepping stone blocks to walk easier in the middle, etc...
For varieties I have %26amp; are hardy, care, etc.. (I'm Zone 4; you are probably Zone 3), just contact me.
Reply:Plant vegetables you will eat. My mom grows everything and then has to find someone to give them to, not always easy!
I suggest lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, beans, peas, and cucumbers.
For flowers, figure out if you have sun or shade.
Sun - marigolds are very easy, colorful, and flower all summer. Compliment them with purple petunias, alyssum, asters, or zinnias.
Shade - impatiens grow well. Begonias, ferns, love shade too.
Enjoy! Gardening is my therapy.
Reply:You might try planting some things which overwinter: collards, rhubarb, "Egyptian" onions. Perennials like Irises and Peonies are nice.
Reply:I find that "impatiens" are the best flowers to plant. They're easy to grow and they "do" grow in sun or partial shade regardless of what they say.
Plant them and feed them miracle grow, 1x week for the first month and I end up with yes....3 feet high Impatiens. Everyone stops and compliments me on my garden and wonder how do I get them so full and HIGH.
I don't tell my neighbors my secret, they should know that if they garden a lot.
Plus they come in many color varieties, one year I may do purple and pink, the next year I may do white and orange (every other plant).
The easiest veg. to grow I have found were tomatoes, yellow squash and zucchini.
Make sure your soil is "tillered" pretty well prior to planting, this will allow for good water drainage and allow your veggis to have sufficient root growth.
Since you are in Canada, ask your local plant and veggie nurseries what does grow the best for your climate.
Have fun, I love gardening :)
Reply:Try some vines. Clematis are beautiful %26amp; Engleman ivies or Virginia Creepers will give nice Autumn colour. They are low maintenence plants.
