Planting a garden in michigan?

This spring, I am going to be planting a garden around my house. We have an old Michigan basement, and was told that by planting flowers and plants around the house, we could decrease the amount of moisture that comes into our basement.

So my question is, what types of plants, flowering plants, and flowers are good at absorbing a lot of moisture and would do well in Michigan? I want the kind that will bloom every year because I don't want to have to replant everything. Any tips or advice on growing these plants and flowers would be helpful too as I've never planted a thing in my life before. Thanks!

Plants absorb moisture in the air. Shrubs like the crab apple, evergreens. For flowering plants to add color to the garden, consider the annuals because the perennials such as daffodils, peony, tulips should have been planted during fall and bloom each spring (no need to replant yearly). Rose, a flowering perennial can also be grown in spring.

You can also decorate the basement with ornamental plants to also decrease moisture in the basement since plants absorb moisture. Select the plants that thrive under low lighting condition. Examples are the amaryllis (enjoy the taste of spring indoors), chinese evegreen (low maintenance and a humidifier), to name a few.

Reply:You are asking alot of different situations in one.

My concern is moisture in basement first., second you want to purchase perennial flower plants, not annual plants.

I live in MI. If I had your knowledge and concerns I would contact a landscaping co. for an consultation. You have several months to research perennial plants in all our local book store, and pick out and copy what interests you.

Sometimes, what you plant around your home can hinder and create more moisture inside than eliminate it, also check with a local basement co. for a free estimate.

You have all this time, make good use of it.

good luck to you.
